HURRICANE KATRINA

Saturday, October 1, 2005.

This morning I got up and had some quiet time before the rest of the family woke up.  I went outside and did the laundry, then I came in and put some eggs on to cook.  A little Tony's (http://www.tonychachere.com/ ) and some nutmeg went into them, then cheese on top.  Just the way I like it.  Breakfast can be normal again...

I went back outside and was pulling nails out of the grass with the magnetic pickup that I had the foresight to buy in Houston right after the storm for just this purpose.  Virginia got up and came outside, so I showed her how to work it.  After breakfast, we'll both get dressed and she can do this while I clear the rest of the tree in the back yard.

I have a positive attitude this morning.  Today is October 1, and damage control is almost over.  Cleanup has begun around here, and it's time to crank it up.

OH, but first, here's a picture from when I was in line at the bank yesterday.

I finally got to the point in the back yard where I could pull Virginia's swingset out of the wreckage of my back yard.  Yeah, that's broken.  She's pretty upset about it...

Virginia brought me snacks and water while I was working.  I had to keep telling her to put her shoes on.

After much work, I finally got my Sunday Morning Sitting Spot cleaned up.  Compare it to the picture below for the before/after effect.

Unfortunately, there is still a rubble pile in my back yard.  I did manage to find most of the vent-o-matic hood that blew off my house during the storm.  I figured it belonged on top of the pile since it used to be on top of the house...

We got everything hauled out of the yards and into the right-of-way at the street.  The pile is a lot higher today.  In the hopes that someone would carry some of it off, I put up a sign.  :)

That's a lot of pile - and only from two trees.

Looking south, my street looks more or less normal except for my pile.  My house took more damage than any other house on the block.

Looking north down my street, it looks REALLY normal.  That large live oak just left of center is Bob and Maggie's house.  My tree lost large limbs.  Their tree didn't even lose any leaves.  Go figure.

My feet show tan lines from my sandals straps.  I've had a lot of sun in the past few days.

I've got friends over now.  We're having an After Hurricane party.  Big fun.  I'll post more tonight or tomorrow, but I'm going to go ahead and post this now.

Pictures of the day:

This is a boat - parked high and dry on Napoleon near Claiborne Ave.

I didn't know Mary could bar-b-que.  She obviously has nothing to do with the weather.

Bits and pieces of collected debris...

Reopening the creamery.  I like that shirt.

Speaking of shirts, the street vendors are already making a profit.
