On Thursday my first class is Michael Shain's Tactical Shotgun Instructor Clinic.  The course blurb is:

Brief lecture followed by shooting intensive day of drills and course of fire intended to help instructors develop a skill building approach to teaching tactical shotgun handling techniques by layering individual skills into skill sets, as well as designing and developing short, intensive, reality based training scenarios.  Multiple target engagement, shooting and moving, use of cover, weak hand shooting, combat and tactical loading, select loading and transition to handgun will be emphasized.  Student Requirements: Duty gear and weapon with 50 rounds of ammunition, shotgun with 125 rounds of ammunition, 2 spare pistol magazines or speedy (sic) loaders.  Law enforcement shotgun with tactical sling recommended.  Optional gear: knee pads, shotgun ammo carrier (sidesaddle, ammo caddie, etc.)

This was *supposed* to be an all day class, but somehow it got split into 2 four hour blocks.  I would *really* have liked to have had the all day class with Michael Shain.  I learned a lot in Mr. Shain's class.  It's kind of hard to take notes with a shotgun in your hand, though.

Simple course setup.  The cardboard worked well until it started raining on us.

1

Everyone still dry...

2

More than any other instructor I saw, Michael was very safety conscious.
He actively followed the shooter around ready to prevent any careless handling.

3

He just looks SO comfortable with that shotgun.

4

There were several weapon failures during the class.  None of them major.
This is one that resulted in abandoning the shotgun and making the transition to pistol to finish the course.

Fishing around in your pocket for a slug is not the fastest way to select slug...

An officer from Hong Kong runs one of the courses.

I was given a video by one of the other class members of myself running one of the courses.  I would like to tell you that it shows my unparalled prowess with a tactical shotgun, but it doesn't.  I have some work to do.  You can view the video by clicking here.  At least I have mad holster skills...  If the video does not play, right click on the link and select 'SAVE TARGET AS', save the video and run it from your hard drive.
